As investigations into the tragedy that was witnessed at Precious Talent School in Dagoretti South are being carried out, disturbing details have emerged about the structural integrity of the building.
The collapsed classroom has claimed eight lives leaving more than 64 pupils injured.
Appearing on KTN News, Moses Nyakiaongora, the Secretary National Building Inspectorate, who visited the scene earlier in the day revealed that the material used in the building was not suitable for construction.
"The structure looked like a temporary makeshift and it didn't follow any building regulations. Chicken wire was used to reinforce the suspended floor that collapsed," he stated.
He further revealed that the building could not hold any weight as the walls were constructed using iron sheets.
"The makeshift structure started as a single blocked and it looked like the owner converted one block of classrooms into a double-storey building. The person who did this is a criminal. It is a criminal offence," he stated.
Education CS George Magoha, visited the site on Monday, September 23, where he explained that he had personally assessed the classrooms in the institution adding that the contractor had created a foundation for a single-story building before later deciding to add another floor on the building.
“I have been to all the other classrooms and in my most humble opinion, they are stable. So if a spade must be called a spade ahead of the investigations, you notice that somebody went and build another storey on top of the temporary structure.
"If you go ahead and do so without anybody’s approval I think we should be fair to each other including being fair to the government,” explained Magoha.
“If the owners of this school had remained with a single-storey building this accident should not have occurred. If we were working in an ideal situation, they should have come to ask for approval from the ministry which I can guarantee you they would not have gotten,” he added.
