Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has jumped to the defence of President Uhuru Kenyatta after members launched a uhurumustgo campaign on Friday, March 20, 2020.
The debate came about after a section of Kenyans argued that the head of state had not done enough to cushion the country from the Coronavirus pandemic. They argued that the country was on an economic regress while others stated that he was yet to fulfil any of the promises he made to members of the public in the Jubilee Party manifesto.
The ODM legislator hit back at critics arguing that President Kenyatta was the head of state, a Kenyan and should be accorded respect, sending a warning to individuals he alleged were activists pushing the agenda.
"Those who keep shouting and yapping that uhurumustgo must stop that nonsense. Where do you want him to go yet he’s Kenyan? Do you want him to go to China and be killed by coronavirus? Uhuru is the President and must be respected," Babu stated.
"Activists must be humble or be humbled," he warned.
Several other arguments were ignited by posts of a cabinet meeting on March 19, 2020, that were pulled down from State House's social media platforms.
Members of the public hinged their arguments on President Uhuru making what they alleged were novice mistakes, including allowing Gire Ali, an employee at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport who took a video of a China Southern Airlines plane landing at JKIA, a criminal.
"Kenyans won't die much of Covid-19 but because of the depression, oppression caused by serial looters. Uhuru's gov't, hunger will kill Kenyans. You tell people to stay indoors when they don't have food," one Jaika Alex argued, noting that the country was hit by the locusts menace which destroyed food crops.
A section of netizens insisted that the head of state be respected and it was not sensible to call for his ouster while the country stared at a probable health crisis.
"So you guys tweeting uhurumustgo want us to remove the President in a middle of a national crisis?" Abraham Mutahi posed.
"Those saying uhurumustgo, must be courageous enough and say who they are and who sent them. They must also tell us where they want Uhuru to go and be truthful enough to tell all those voted for Jubilee to go with him" Kipkorir argued.
As the debate raged, some alleged that President Kenyatta's national agenda had been derailed by his 'partnership' with ODM Leader Raila Odinga, with economist Mutahi Ngunyi roping the former premier into the uhurumustgo campaign.
