Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has voiced strong criticism over the actions of Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie for sensational sentiments he expressed about the government's preparedness for the Covid-19 outbreak in Kenya
In a press conference at the Harambee House on Sunday, March 29, the CS condemned Kiarie's utterances stating that the MP was spreading false information.
"It is really wrong and disheartening for those in leadership to continue perpetuating false information that has got nothing to do with the real cases," lamented Kagwe.
The CS stated that Kiarie's statements could only be counted as a ploy to garner political mileage in the country.
"Trying to gain political mileage out of a disease is as immoral as anyone could ever imagine.
"It is the worst of what we can see in terms of political manoeuvre. It symbolises everything that is wrong with our society," stated Kagwe.
He highlighted his disappointment with the numbers referenced by Kiarie questioning why a national leader would choose to share false information.
"We have noted that misinformation is doing the rounds in social media where a leader is claiming that there are 7,000 under mandatory quarantine. While this may be the case later, and perhaps even more people, it is simply at the moment not true," Kagwe asserted.
The CS further wondered why the Member of Parliament would release the figures on the premise that the government was not sharing accurate information.
"So why would you as a leader in society say that 7,000 Kenyans are in quarantine and why would you think that the govt isn't telling you the truth?" posed Kagwe.
He clarified that there were only 2,050 people across the 14 quarantine mandatory quarantine facilities.
"For the record, we have 2,050 people in mandatory quarantine in government facilities," He stated.
Kagwe reiterated his condemnation of the leader's actions and called for all Kenyans to work together in the fight against the Coronavirus disease and to not only think it was the government's responsibility.
"It is unethical for anyone and especially one purporting to be a leader to mislead people for any reason they may have with regard to the fight against Coronavirus.
"We want to appeal to all Kenyans to embrace the fight against coronavirus as opposed to assuming that this is a government affair" added the CS.
The contentious statements by the MP were flagged by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and he was summoned to DCI offices a few minutes after 5.00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29.
