Motorist Kills Police Officer Manning Curfew Roadblock

A police officer died on the evening of Sunday, April 12, after a motorist ran into him while manning a roadblock.

According to a report by Daily Nation, the constable was manning the roadblock at Salgaa along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

The motorist was reportedly trying to beat the curfew when he knocked the officer dead in the incident that occurred at around 7 p.m.

Confirming the incident, Nakuru County Police Commander Stephen Matu disclosed that the officer was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

"The vehicle was heading from Nakuru when the accident occurred,’’ stated the officer.

The commander further noted that the perpetrator was taken to police custody before being released on bail after recording a statement.

“He was released because he could not be detained at the police station due to the measures aimed at containing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. He is waiting to be arraigned,’’ noted the officer.

The body of the officer was transferred to an unidentified mortuary where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.

That was the second case of a motorist killing an officer since the dusk - dawn curfew was ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta that kicked off on Friday, March 28.

Constable George Aluoch lost his life in a grisly at Mombasa Container Terminal Limited (MCT) area along Port Reitz Road in Mombasa County.

He was escorting an unknown driver to Changamwe Police Station for a traffic offence when the said driver rammed into the rear of a stationary truck from the passengers' side killing the officer instantly.
