18 guns have been reported missing from a police post in the Rift Valley.

Following mudslides that swept away Chesogon Police Post, the rifles and more than 1,200 rounds of ammunition are reported to be missing.

Heavy rains pounded Chesogon on Saturday, April 18 that led to flash floods and mudslides and left a trail of destruction.

One of the police officers on duty at the station on the fateful day is yet to be traced but four were found albeit having injuries.

According to a police report, the guns are 17 G3 rifles and one AK47.

A bulletproof vest belonging to one of the police officers was found meters away from the police station buried in mud.

The public was warned by West Pokot County Police Commander Jackson Tumwet against stealing the firearms which are believed to be buried in the mud.

He urged the residents to surrender the firearms to the chief in case they found them, as search still continues for bodies.

A local man, Emmanuel Natush urged the government to move with speed to find the guns, "I’m pleading with my fellow community members to surrender the guns in case they were swept away close to their homes.

"Somebody can get the guns and misuse them. The government should act swiftly to recover all the missing guns," he stated.

Chesogon has previously experienced some insecurities as back in March 2019 when at least 200 people fled their homesteads due to insecurity at the troubled border of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

The police post was not the only installation destroyed by the floods, as Cheptulel Boys Secondary School and the teachers training college was also affected.

The mudslide left 12 people dead and close to 4,000 people displaced.
