Betty Kaari Murungi, wife of Siaya Senator James Orengo has been rewarded with a teaching role at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London.

SOAS appointed Murungi as Professor of Practice in an announcement posted on their website on Friday, June 12. 

For one to be considered as a  Professor of Practice, he or she must have more than 10 years of experience in a certain field.

Murungi is a lawyer by profession and an expert in transitional justice processes, women’s human rights, gender, constitutionalism and governance.

"I’m absolutely delighted at this opportunity to join the SOAS community. For the last twenty years, my work has focused on advancing gender justice in international criminal justice mechanisms and in peace agreements in conflict and post-conflict situations. 

"I am particularly drawn to SOAS’s interdisciplinary approach and focus on seeking solutions to global issues through ideas and scholarship," Murungi stated upon her appointment. 

Dr Awino Okech, Chair of the Centre for Gender Studies lauded Murungi's appointment and her exemplary work. 

"The Centre for Gender Studies is pleased to welcome Kaari Murungi as a Professor of Practice. Kaari brings over three decades of legal expertise deployed nationally (Kenyan), regionally (Africa) and internationally. 

"We are thrilled to have our community of students, researchers and engaged citizens at SOAS and globally benefit from Kaari's wealth of experience," Okech stated. 

Murungi, sister to Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi served as the Africa representative on the Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for Victims at the International Criminal Court (2010-2013). 

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and lawyer Makau Mutua were among the first to congratulate her. 

Dr. Masibo Lumala, a Senior Lecturer at the School of Information Sciences, Moi University was also appointed to the African Tourism Board in June 2020. The professor will serve as a member of the organisation’s Technology, Innovation, Free Movement and Facilitation Committee.

The African Tourism Board, which is based in South Africa, markets and promotes Africa as a tourism destination and lobbies for free movement of Africans across the continent.
