Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Youth Coordinator Benson Musungu, 34, on Saturday, July 11, narrated his experience after spending 15 days in the ICU at the Agha Khan Hospital after contracting Covid-19.
Speaking to Citizen TV, the youth leader disclosed that he checked himself into hospital after developing a fever and a loss of appetite.
Soon after arriving at the hospital, Musungu was taken to the ICU after developing breathing complications.
"I remember I lost my appetite on May 27, and it came with other things like fever. On the 8th day (June 3), that was when I decided to go to the hospital.
"When I got to the hospital and lost my breath, they took me straight to ICU. The reason why I was there for 15 days, is because my body had not food. They had to feed me first. On the sixth day they started medication," stated Musungu.
"After 10 days, I could feel myself and answer my phone. I could disconnect the machine and go to the toilet by myself," he added.
After discharge, he narrates how he faced stigma noting that some people accused him of faking his illness.
"People were looking at me not knowing how to treat me. The worst message I received on my phone read; 'I am very sure your bank account is smiling because you have been paid to play sick'.
"Who can play to a point of going to ICU?" he wondered.
At the end of treatment, he was presented by a Ksh2.5 million bill which the ODM party helped him clear.
ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale, in early June, confirmed that Musungu was responding well to medication and that his wife and child had tested negative.
Etale further pointed out that the ODM party was covering his hospital bill as part of a medical cover for party officials.
"He has medical insurance taken care of by the party. The party is taking care of everything through insurance. Our staff is well catered for and everything will be sorted," he added.
The disease has claimed 184 lives, as of July 11, with 9,726 having tested positive since March.
