Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has condemned health professionals who are not adhering to directives that had been set by the government to curb the spread of Covid-19.

During the daily COVID-19 briefing from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) offices in Nairobi, Mutahi gave an example of two doctors who had defied government directives.

"There are health professionals who are misbehaving," Kagwe warned.

In one of the cases, Kagwe narrated that a Covid-19 positive doctor had insisted on performing surgery on a patient, without taking into considertion that he or she could infect the patient.

"We had a case of a doctor who turned positive and wanted to continue behaving normally, go to a theatre and start conducting surgery and you are positive. This borders on criminal behaviour," Kagwe stated.

In the second case, the CS disclosed that a doctor from the Kenyatta National Hospital had travelled up-country, failed to self quarantine and insisted on performing surgery before a collegue reported him to the authorities.

The CS pleaded with healthcare workers to also adhere to the set guidelines by the government.

"The highest level of discipline is expected from frontline soldiers and if you slck, we can lose this war so please, what we are saying is what we must do," he stated.

As at now, 634 health workers have turned Covid-19 positive which is about 3% of the 19,125 cases that have been reported.

Kagwe confirmed that the healthcare workers had been provided with sufficient personal protective equipment (PPEs). He added that counties had been allowed to buy PPEs with money provided to them by the national government.

544 more Covid-19 cases were recorded on Wednesday bringing the total number of cases in the country to 19,125.

Of the 19,125 cases,  8,021 patients had been discharged and 311 had succumbed to the virus.
