Police officers are investigating the mysterious death of two children, whose lifeless bodies were found inside a rental apartment in Githurai, Nairobi County.

Sources who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke indicated that the two children, aged nine and four had been left home alone by their mother, but were found dead on returning home from work.

"The nine-year-old had told a friend that she and her brother were having a terrible stomach upset," one of the residents stated.

The two children were pronounced dead at the St John's Hospital in Githurai and post mortem results disclosed that the siblings had died of poisoning.

On learning of their demise, the children's mother, Caroline Nzilani, contacted her estranged husband, James Mwangi, informed him of the death and asked him to record a statement at the chief's office.

Instead of going to the chief's office, Mwangi headed to the hospital where he confirmed the childrens' death.

Police officers have urged the family to remain calm, indicating that investigations have been launched to ascertain what could have led to the death of the children.

"So far no one has been arrested and investigations into the matter are ongoing and several exhibits have been forwarded to the relevant authorities to ascertain what happened," the police stated.

The incident came almost two months after bodies of two children (Alvina Mutheu and Henry Jacktone) were found hidden in the boot of a car at Athi River Police Station.

The children had been reported missing on June 11, 2020 and the Director of Criminal Investigations started probing the matter.

The bodies were discovered after a businessman went to collect his detained car and reported a foul smell emanating from the boot.

Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor stated it was difficult to determine the exact cause of death due to the level of decomposition of the bodies.
