The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Thursday, September 24, denied reports that the recruitment of teachers had been stopped.
The institution's head of Corporate Communications Beatrice Wababu warned all applicants to be wary of misleading information over the recruitment exercise.
"Beware of fake news to the effect that the recruitment of teachers has been stopped. The exercise is on, successful applicants will be notified about interviews. Be vigilant of fraudsters and fake news peddlers," she stated.
The fake notice in circulation indicated that the commission had decided to confirm teachers in internship first and would post a new schedule for the remaining vacancies.
The Teachers Service Commission on September 1, 2020, announced that it was seeking to recruit a cumulative 11,574 teachers in a mass exercise with 5,000 vacancies in public primary and secondary schools to support the 100% transition.
An additional 5,474 vacancies were advertised for primary and 1,100 vacancies for secondary schools to replace teachers who exited the service.
Earlier in September, CS George Magoha asked teachers to report to schools latest Monday, September 28, following a directive issued by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia.
"Teachers can start to prepare to report back to their schools to make them habitable ahead of the students' arrival.
"At that time, we will have phased re-opening with priority given to exam classes. In fact, technical colleges are likely to re-open soon," he stated.
A day later, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion on Tuesday, directed all schools to ensure a gender desk is set up ahead of a planned reopening.
Sossion urged the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to adopt a gender desk in schools to ensure every learner returns to school.
"I am directing all schools to establish a gender desk. There must be a KNUT gender desk at every school that must be expanded to include TSC and other stakeholders," he stated.
