The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued guidelines on the preparation of the national exams despite a reopening date for schools not being set.
KNEC acting Chief Executive Mercy Karogo directed all sub-county directors of education to collect registration nominal rolls from headteachers between October 4 and 9.
The school heads were further directed to submit registration details of candidates who will sit the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
"During the stipulated period, KNEC officers will collect the 2020 KCPE and KCSE registration nominal roll.
"In regard to this, you are requested to have collected them from the head of institutions," Karogo stated.
Another instruction issued was a directive to the school heads to avail details of students registered as private candidates in their respective schools. The details of all candidates will be filled in an online site after the headteachers verify and approve the data.
President Uhuru Kenyatta declined to reopen schools after the Ministry of Education failed to convince him of the safety of students.
Form Four and Class 8 candidates were poised to be among the first to report to schools, with national exams set for March 2021.
Education CS George Magoha, however, maintained that schools were ready to reopen amid the Covid-19 pandemic. This was after Kenyatta rejected his proposal to have students resume studies.
"We have to ask ourselves what will be different in January 2021, if there won't be much difference, we need to move towards a consensus to reopen schools as soon as possible. I cannot give you a definite date, but I can assure you that it is time to reopen learning institutions, because we do not expect any much difference now," Magoha stated on Wednesday, September 30.
Teachers already reported in schools in September 2020 to prepare to receive students. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) directed them to have staff meetings to discuss the implementation of strategies on the resumption of teaching and learning.
They were also tasked with developing timetables, preparation of schemes of work, working on the Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD), and updating the Teachers Management Information System (TMIS).
The Minsitry of Education also directed final year students in all public universities and tertiary institutions to report back to school on Monday, October 5.
