Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has blown the lid on a humiliating incident which he claimed made President Uhuru Kenyatta reject his proposals.
Speaking in a press briefing on Thursday, November 4, Governor Nyagarama expressed disappointment in how a section of his constituents behaved during President Kenyatta's visit to the county on October 22.
He stated that during a rally with the Head of State in Ikonge goons heckled him in front of President Kenyatta who had just come from the launch of the Building Bridges Initiative report and development tour in Kisii County.
Uhuru had pushed for the development of the Kisii Cold Storage Facility, Nyakoe Modern Market, Suneka Airstrip Phase I, lighting in Kisii CBD, Kisii Water Treatment Plant as well as the Daraja Mbili Market.
“I had planned to read the Nyamira County Memorandum to the President so that he could help us achieve it just like he had assisted Kisii and other counties.
“However, some goons were hired to shout me down and I asked them whether they wanted development or heckling and they chose the latter. I don’t want to dwell on that because it doesn’t affect me personally but affects the development of the county. The money and resources would have been used here. However we are still following up with him,” he stated.
The governor stated that the humiliation set a bad picture that did not sit well with the head of state.
The silver lining was that President Kenyatta commissioned the 45-kilometer Chebilat-Ikonge-Chabera-Nyamusi Road which was constructed at a cost of Ksh 3.1 billion.
“Even in marriage when you are arguing with your wife, you should not fight in front of guests. You should wait for them to leave then sort out your issues,” he added.
The governor called for unity of purpose in order to develop the county to better standards.
A month prior, Anti-Nyagarama protestors accused him of facilitating corruption in the county government
The group petitioned the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to probe the governor.
The youths accused the Nyaragama of employing retirees in his government as they wallow in poverty despite their academic qualifications.
