The County Government of Kisumu has rolled out an affordable housing plan in the lakeside city with 1,200 houses in the pipeline.

The project is under the affordable housing agenda rolled out by the national government with the units expected to be completed in 14 months.

It will be sponsored by Local Authorities Pension Trust (LAPT) as well as the County Pension Plan with construction expected to kick off in April 2021.

Groundwork on the work dubbed Ofafa Housing Plan is already in motion after over 1,000 people who were living on the parcel of land were asked to vacate.

The estate will contain 108 0ne-bedroom units, 96 three-bedroom units, 714 two-bedroom units while another section will contain luxurious two and three-bedroom units.

Speaking to the press, an architect of the project Peter Wasilwa disclosed that shops would also be set up around the state.

"We are delivering 92 shops which will be prioritised for the small traders who are domiciled within this estate.

"It is a very special consideration because from LAP Trust's perspective, we are not going to make a shilling from these shops," stated Wasilwa.

While speaking at the event, Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o revealed that the county was in the process of rehabilitating eight of its parks to serve as green spaces.

"We also want to reconnect the Kisumu City to the lake and make sure that the use of urban space in this city includes respect for green space.

"That is why we are restructuring and rebuilding our eight parks in the city," stated Nyong'o.

The new project comes on the backdrop of the national government's delivery of 488 newly constructed houses in Ngara, Nairobi County under the same project.

The houses located along Park Road include one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom houses which sold for Ksh1 million, Ksh2 million and Ksh3 million respectively.

At the location, housing units totaled 1,370 - 822 would be floated to the public while 548 would be reserved for civil servants.
