The government has announced that the first batch of 150 tenants will move into the affordable housing units in Pangani in February 2021.
This set of lucky Kenyans will become the first owners of the Ksh 5 billion project unveiled under President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big 4 Agenda.
Tenants enjoy sufficient water supply storage, basement parking with playgrounds and other utilities at a low cost.
"The first block of 160 units will be handed over in February 2021, nine months after the project began in May 2020.
"The original 48 tenants of the Old Pangani Estate will be part of the group that will take ownership of the new units," Lands, Housing and Urban Renewal Executive Charles Kerich stated.
The first 48 owners were evicted in June 2019 to pave way for reconstruction. They were given Ksh 600,000 to facilitate their rent in areas in areas of their own choice.
Kerich added that the government is keen on completing the other units in Pangani with nine floors already complete in Block 1. Block 2 is set to be completed in June 2021.
Kenyans who hope to benefit are required to register for the affordable housing scheme dubbed Boma Yangu. According to Housing PS Charles Hinga, a lottery will then be used to pick the new house owners as each project is completed.
In September 2020, Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director of Housing Charles Sikuku stated that the housing project in Pangani would be completed in December 2021.
Other estates that are under redevelopment are Jeevanjee/Bachelors Quarters, Ngong Road Phases I and II, Uhuru Estate, New Ngara, Old Ngara and Suna Road.
These estates are earmarked for completion in May 2022. The housing project in Ngara has 1,370 units comprising of one, two and three-bedroom houses, and targets low and middle-income earners.
Ministry of Housing Communications Advisor John Kaplich revealed the pricing range of the housing units.
"The project is targeting low-income earners, people earning below Ksh. 20,000 are the ones who will preferably go for the one-bedroom units costing Ksh. 1.5 million.
"There are people earning below Ksh. 50,000, who we recommend should go for the two-bedroom units costing Ksh. 3 million," he explained.
