Three vehicles belonging to Machakos county government have been impounded by police officers for allegedly being registered with fake number plates.

The vehicles were seized while on a campaign trail in Kathiani constituency for Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate John Katuku who is vying for the Machakos senatorial by election.

The county government vehicles reportedly belonging to Machakos governor Alfred Mutua were detained at Machakos police station. The drivers were, however, released.

A section of politicians took to the police station to demand the officers to take action against the people in question. Among the politicians included GDDP party candidate for the Machakos senatorial mini poll, Simon Kitheka, his supporters and other Wiper leaders. Machakos OCPD Moss Ndiwa, however, stated that their hands were tied regarding the matter.

"Our role in such a situation when the unit impounds government vehicles is only to detain them for some time," Ndiwa stated.

The politicians, however, seemed not to be deterred and sought for those culpable to be dealt accordingly.

“We shall also petition the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to take appropriate action against the particular candidate for flouting election law," Kitheka stated.

Governor Mutua, however, speaking to this writer, noted that the claims were only propaganda. The reports come after the race for the Machakos Senatorial by election heats up.

The IEBC had revealed 11 candidates cleared for the race slated for March 18, 2021.The candidates included John Mutua Katuku (Maendeleo Chap Chap Party), Stanley Masai Muindi (Party of Economic Democracy), Lily Nduku Nwanzia of Chama Cha Uzalendo became the first female candidate to be cleared and Jonathan Makenzi Maweu (Independent Candidate).

Other aspirants include Ngengele Urbanus Mutunga Muthama of United Democratic Alliance party, Munyambu Francis Musembi (Independent), Nthama Sebastian Nzau (Independent), Kitheka Simeon Kioko (Grand Dream Development Party), Musingi John Kioko (Muungano Party), Otto Edward Musembi Nthenge of FORD-ASILI.

Recently, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in a turnaround, announced that it would back the Wiper candidate Kavindu for the Minipoll.

The race is however seen as a showdown between ex-Senator Johnson Muthama and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
