Citizen TV anchor Trevor Ombija, on Monday, March 8, opened up about viral posters that have been doing rounds in the social media announcing his candidature for a parliamentary seat in 2022.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the news anchor stated that he had seen the posters, and was impressed and touched by the gesture, but revealed that he was yet to announce his candidature.
The posters showed a branded reflector jacket bearing Ombija's smiling face and a message to the people of Nyakach. The poster read: 'Ombija Tayaa' translated to mean 'Ombija the Lamp'. It is possible the people of Nyakach have decide to look at the news anchor as the lamp to guide their way come 2022.
He, however, maintained that the posters were made by his constituents, and that he had not yet declared any interest in the seat.
"It is very early to make that decision in any shape or form. Right now I am just a journalist on TV, and that is what I want to focus on right now," stated Ombija who is still at Royal Media Sevices.
"Running has party affiliations, I am not a member of any party. It is the people who have chosen me because they never thought one of their own would end up on TV.
"They think I should do more. It is a good thing. I might even do it, but not now. It is not the time to talk about it," he added.
Currently, Ombija anchors the Monday Special Report show, a prime time bulletin that airs on Citizen TV on Mondays.
He previously worked as a news anchor at NTV, and was in 2020 awarded the Head of State Commendation by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Several journalist have, in the past, made the switch from the screen and successfully made hay in the political world.
Some of the former journalists who succeeded in politics include current Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju, who anchored news at KTN before climbing the political ladder.
Others are former KBC reporter Naisula Lesuuda who first bagged a Senate nomination before being elected Samburu West MP, and former KTN investigative reporter Mohammed Ali who serves as Nyali MP.
