KFCB Releases Statement on Eric Omondi Case

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) on Monday, March 15, issued a statement following the recent arrest of comedian Eric Omondi.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in collaboration with the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) on March 11, arrested Omondi for alleged production of unauthorized content.

In their statement, the film body stated that it had keenly examined the apology offered by Omondi, and agreed to settle the case with the Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR) on conditions.

That upon agreement of the conditions set, the board shall withdraw the case against Eric Omondi and instead pursue an ADR mechanism.

In one of the conditions, Omondi has been asked to delete all the explicit content running on his online channels.

The comedian is also required to suspend the program dubbed 'Wife Material' until the hearing of his case, ensure that the producers of the program comply with the law and that no further explicit content is aired on his platforms.

Moreover, Omondi is required to ensure producers of the program submit it for examination upon completion, future productions to adhere to the law, and that he commits to not producing explicit content unless approved by the board in line with conditions set in the out of court settlement.

He was also told that there shall not be more exhibition of content that promotes pornography or that portrays women and youths as sexual objects and also required to comply with the provisions of the law that regulates content as well as not promote propaganda for war, incitement to violence, hate speech or vilification of persons.

On Saturday, March 13, Ezekiel Mutua announced that Felix Oduor alias Jalang’o and Daniel Ndambuki alias Churchill would mediate in Omondi’s case.

Eric Omondi was arrested on Thursday, March 11, and released on Friday, March 12 on a Ksh 50,000 bond. After his release, he publicly apologized for the incident.
