Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) is in the final stages of implementing the matatu CBD ban and has issued a notice indicating that a dry run will be held at the Green Park Terminus on Tuesday morning, April 27.

The notice dated Monday, April 26, directed that all matatus operating at Railways Bus Terminus would not be allowed into the CBD and would terminate and pick up passengers at the Green Park Terminus.

The operation, aimed at testing matatu ban from the CBD, is expected to last between 6:00am and 9:00am to inform NMS on the effectiveness of the newly built terminus.

"This notice, therefore, informs the general public that all PSV vehicles operating from the Nairobi Railway Station Frontage will do a test run dropping passengers at the Green Park Terminal (former Lunar Park) on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, between 6:00am and 9:00am.

"Thereafter, normal PSV pick up and drop off operations will continue from the Nairobi Railway Station frontage until further notice," read the notice in part.

NMS explained that the test run was part of the decongestion strategies of the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan (NIUPLAN).

The agency which is led by Major General Mohammed Badi also noted that the terminus was nearing completion and was entering the transition phase of commissioning.

It explained that the phase involved an assessment by stakeholders on their level of preparedness for commissioning the facility.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, in his tour of the facility on April 1, gave it a clean bill of health after being shown the translucent waiting bays and informed that a supermarket, as well as a health center, would be put up at the park.

"This will be a restaurant, will also have a supermarket, we are sourcing people who want to invest.

"We will have waiting rooms and the screen with information will be in this room. There will be a public address system like the airport," explained an Engineer to the President at the time.

Once completed, the park is expected to accommodate over 180,000 commuters on a daily basis.

The park is expected to significantly reduce traffic jams in Nairobi CBD.
