The People's Empowerment Party (PEP) candidate George Koimburi was on Wednesday, May 19, announced the winner of the Juja parliamentary by-election.

This is after clinching 12,159 votes, followed by his Jubilee opponent Susan Waititu, who came a distant second with 5,746 votes. The total number of votes cast was 21,862 with 150 rejected votes.

Earlier, the Jubilee parliamentary candidate Susan Waititu had stormed out of the tallying centre at Mangu High School, protesting the results being announced by the IEBC.

Her supporters were heard chanting; "No Susan, no peace." They claimed that the votes had been stolen at night and demanded a recount.

On Tuesday evening, IEBC announced that it had suspended the tallying process for Juja constituency following a disruption by a group of individuals led by Kiambu Governor James Nyoro.

"These acts of hooliganism made it impossible for the tallying process to proceed," reads an excerpt of a statement signed by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.

The chairman added that the that suspension of the tallying was important to ensure safety of staff, the election materials and to preserve the integrity of the election process.

A video has been making rounds on social media showing a visibly angry Nyoro lashing out at the IEBC officials. He alleged that some of Ms Waititu's votes had been lost in the field.

The Jubilee party has suffered an embarrassing loss in the just concluded by-elections bearing in mind that they lost in both Rurii Ward in Nyandarua and Bonchari mini-poll.

In Rurii ward, UDA's candidate Francis Muraya trounced Jubilee's Peter Thunji to be the winner.

On the other hand, ODM clinched the Bonchari parliamentary seat after the former Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) Director-General Pavel Oimeke garnered 9,049 votes.

Jubilee's  Zebedeo Opore was second with 7,279 votes while UDA's Teresa Bitutu came third with 6,964.
