Police authorities in Nairobi have now stepped up their game to reduce rampant crime in the city and its surroundings.

According to Nairobi county police commander Augustine Nthumbi, a multi-agency team has been established to do everything within their powers as provided by law to reduce the crime rate in the area.

While addressing the press on the police plans to up their game to protect the residents from criminals, the county boss said many plains clothes officers including the special team were already deployed in various hotspots to achieve the goal.

Criminal activities including violent robbery in broad daylight have been rampant within the central business district.

Recently, an unbelievable drama was witnessed in Nairobi’s Moi Avenue after two thugs attempted to rob popular actor Ainea Ojiambo of his jewellery in broad daylight.

To prevent such incidents, the county commander said special plainclothes officers have been tasked to address such issues within the shortest time possible.

The police have also widened their networks to promptly deal with rampant kidnapping crime within the city.

The most recent kidnapping case was when a 23-year-old Hafsa Mohamed Lukman was abducted by unknown criminals who demanded Ksh5 million ransom. The police later rescued her.

The commander also noted that most crimes involved boda boda riders and warned them against such activities.

He urged the locals to collaborate with the police and report any suspected criminals to ensure adequate security.

Criminals have been targeting people from all places in the city from streets to eateries with the recent incident witnessed early this week when a CCTV camera captured a daring thug stealing a phone from an unidentified person in a city hotel in broad daylight.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has also asked Kenyans to report such incidents to enable the arrest and prosecution of such criminals.
