UPDATE 17:14: A protestor who was among residents demonstrating the death of two brothers was on Thursday, August 5, allegedly shot dead by the police.
Acting County Police boss Kimani Wamitugo confirmed the incident saying that investigations into the matter had been launched.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) on Thursday, August 5, intervened following the death of two brothers under mysterious circumstances in Embu County.
In a statement, the authority indicated that it had deployed investigators from its Nairobi headquarters to beef up their Meru Rapid Investigations counterparts who launched their investigations on Wednesday.
In addition, IPOA warned members of the public of taking matters into their own hands by attacking the police and damaging of property.
"Once investigations are concluded, the authority will make recommendations, including prosecution if criminal culpability is established on the part of the police officers involved," reads an excerpt of the statement.
The two brothers, Benson Njiru Ndwiga,22, and Emmanuel Mutura Ndwiga,19, were allegedly in police custody when they met their death.
The family stated that the duo had been arrested for contravening curfew orders set by the government.
Police from Manyatta Police Station told the family that the duo was not in their custody.
The following day, however, the police contacted the family and informed them that the duo's bodies had been found at the Embu Mortuary.
Following the unfortunate events, irate residents torched a police vehicle during a protest at Kianjokoma Trading Centre, Embu County.
They also barricaded the roads and lit bonfires along the road.
Nominated MP Cecily Mbarire has condemned the incident and asked detectives to speed up investigations into the matter.
