A fire broke out at Kairi Boys High School in Gatundu North on Thursday evening, September 9.

By the time of going to press, causes of the fire had not yet been established. However, locals believed that it could have been caused by students.

Kiambu County Fire Officer Samuel Kahura disclosed that a fire brigade had been deployed to the area in a bid to salvage the remains.

On his part, Githobokoni Ward MCA Martin Githaiga stated that the authorities were doing everything in their power to stop a further spread of the fire.

"Unfortunately, nothing was salvaged from the fire," Githaiga stated.

In recent weeks, there has been a worrying trend of school fires and property destruction resulting in massive losses in terms of infrastructure.

Since the beginning of August, learning has been halted temporarily in seven schools as a result of disruptions.

On Monday, students from Mabale secondary in Busia County demanded the transfer of the school principal after what they termed as mismanagement of the school.

Irate students destroyed property while parents expressed their dissatisfaction with the school management.

Earlier in the year, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) warned students against taking part in any unlawful activity in institutions.

Education CS George Magoha championed the reintroduction of caning back in schools to curb the rising cases of indiscipline among students.

"Learners will not commit crimes and walk scot-free. We shall ensure that these situations are neutralised before they escalate," he stated.
