President Uhuru Kenyatta has hinted on the possibility of lifting the dusk to dawn nationwide curfew.
While addressing the residents of Karatina, Nyeri county, on Monday, October 18, the President bowed to the crowd, who persistently asked him about the ongoing current.
Speaking to them in the language they best understood, Kikuyu, the President told them that the curfew would soon be lifted.
“In the days to come, we will look at it, I’m working, and very soon, you will hear it, I do not want to speak too early but very soon,” Uhuru stated.
He further told the residents that his government was not oblivious to the challenges they face due to the curfew.
"We know that many are suffering due to curfew hours. However, we can only hope it will end this once we are able to contain Covid-19."
The Head of State urged residents to continue following the protocols set by the Ministry of Health in a bid to prevent contraction of Covid-19.
"You need to also protect yourself from the disease, so that when we re-open there are no more deaths, and you will be free to live as you want,” he added.
The President has been under immense pressure to open up the country.
On October 4, Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, announced the further extension of the curfew by 30 days. The decision was informed by the high positivity rate in the country.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), for a country to be opened up, it must record a positivity rate of below 5% for two weeks consecutively.
The Kagwe-led Ministry has embarked on a mass vaccination drive and targets to administer the jab to at least 10 million adults.
With the upcoming Mashujaa Day Celebrations on Wednesday, Kenyans have their fingers crossed that the seven-hour curfew will be lifted.
