A convict who conned a woman Ksh800,000 with a promise of a lucrative job at State House now claims officers at the Kamiti Maximum Prison were part of the syndicate.

Appearing before Milimani Law Courts Chief Magistrate, Susan Shitubi, Patrick Shikure Amere claimed  that he orchestrated and executed the plan with the help of prison wardens.

Amere, who refused to take plea for the crime, wants the court to issue an order that will see him record a fresh police statement and name the officers who worked with him to commit the fraud.

"I would like to make a submission before this court that it grants an order for me to record a statement with police and name the prison officers I collaborated with to acquire the money," he asked the court.

Justice Shitubi slated April 13 as the date she will give directions on the convict's request when the matter will be mentioned next.

Amere's request comes two months after he admitted to committing the crime and charged alongside an accomplice who was also in court for obtaining money through impersonation.

The two are accused of impersonating Defense Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa, to lure the victim into sending them the said amount, guaranteeing her a job as State House Human Resource Manager.

Amere, who is serving life imprisonment, and his accomplice created a Facebook pseudo account and befriended the victim in June 2020. They asked her to share her resume so they could begin the canvassing process at President Uhuru Kenyatta's official residence.

According to prosecutor, Harrison Gikunda, the two then drafted an appointment letter bearing a forged signature of the Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua, asking her to report to work on August 7.

Having fallen prey to the trap, the victim sent the money to the con artists. On trying to reach them a few days later, their phones were switched off. It then dawned on her that she had been conned.

The victim, who is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) holder, filed a report at a police station. A trace of the digital footprints of the phone calls led the investigating officers to the maximum-security prison.
