Looming Crisis as PSV Operators Plan Nationwide Strike

Kenyans who use public transport may be forced to use alternative means of transport Wednesday, following a planned nationwide strike by the matatu industry.

The matatu owners plan to demonstrate the move by National Transport and Safety Authority to slap a ban on Embassava Sacco, Great Rift Valley Sacco and Kabras Sacco.

The three Saccos were banned from normal operations after they were involved in accidents.

Embassava Sacco's vehicles were banned last week following an accident along Jogoo Road which saw two people die.

Matatu owners have however said that the move by NTSA to place a blanket ban on all the Saccos for a mistake committed by one vehicle is unfair.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Association chairman Dickson Mbugua asked all public service vehicles to participate in the strike.

The group wants the authority restructured to include matatu operators, claiming that some of the decisions made would not have been made by someone with experience in public transport.

They also want NTSA director-general Francis Meja and chief executive John Muya to resign.

The matatu operators and owners plan to assemble at Nairobi's Uhuru Park where they will demand audience with the president.
