Kenya Warned Over Cyber Crime Attacks

Information Communication Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has raised the red flag to the rising cases of cyber crime in Kenya.

Reports indicate that from 2013 to 2014 cyber attack cases in Kenya rose from 2.6 million to 5.4 million, which is a double increase, the Nation reports.

According to the ICT Cabinet Secretary, the attacks involving financial fraud or deliberate damage of critical information infrastructure can have a devastating effect on the economy.

Speaking during the opening of COMESA cyber crime security forum, Dr. Matiang'i has called for the urgent adoption of the African Union cyber security protocol.

The Kenya cyber security report 2014 quantified the intensity of the attacks to the country, saying they cost an estimated Sh5 billion annually with top attacks coming from Germany and within Kenya.

COMESA Director of infrastructure Dr Abu Dafalla called on the government to develop the necessary security measures and systems, noting that Kenya is prone to cyber attacks due to the numerous ICT activities.
