Update: Monday, October 24, 2022, 3p.m: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called President William Ruto over the death of investigative journalist Arshad Sharif.

Sharif asked the Kenyan Head of State Ruto to ensure that a proper probe on the matter is conducted without any interference by security officials.

Sharif's body will then be flown back to Pakistan for burial.

" I requested him [Ruto] to ensure fair and transparent investigation into the shocking incident. He promised all-out help including fast-tracking the process of return of the body to Pakistan," he stated.

Police confirmed that renowned Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was gunned down by a contingent of General Service Unit (GSU) officers tracking down the suspected carjacker.

In a report filed at the Magadi police station on Sunday, October 23, the police revealed that Sharif was gunned down by officers from the unit responding to an abduction and car theft case reported in Pangani.

According to OB 14/23/10/2022, the deceased's brother, Khurram Ahmed told the police that they were on their way back to Nairobi when the ambush happened.

"The deceased and his brother were driving back to Nairobi in their KDG 200M when they found the road blocked using small stones and they decided to pass them.

"It was then they heard gunshots towards their vehicle directed from the front and rear," read the statement in part.

Ahmed reached out to a friend, another Pakistani national, informing him of the incident. His friend, who lived along the area, directed him to drive to his house.

"On arrival at the main gate found his brother had died from a gunshot wound on his head. The bullet had penetrated from the back and exited from the front," the police report read.

Earlier in the day, Douglas Wainaina reported his vehicle registered under plate number KDJ 700F stolen.

The case turned into an abduction after he revealed that his son was in the car when the incident happened. The matter was taken up by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

"The son was located at Olosuritia ACK Church within Kiserian, then at the  Kiserian dam estate and later at Olepolos Hills.  The DCI officers alerted  Magadi training school who acted appropriately," the police indicated.

At the time, it was established that a vehicle with a matching number plate had been spotted driving along Kuenia-Kamukuru rough road and consequently an order was given for a roadblock to be mounted.

However, Ahmed was not aware that the roadblock was a cue to stop or that he was under the watch of the officers. As he drove past it, bullets were fired at the car - with utmost precision.

"The motor vehicle had a bullet hole on the left side of the windscreen on the side the deceased was sitting, two bullet holes on the rear left back screen, one bullet hole on the rear right door, four holes right side of the boot and one front right tyre that had been depleted," the police noted.

The body of the deceased was ferried to the Chiromo mortuary in Nairobi where a postmortem will be conducted.

Announcing the death of her husband, the deceased's wife Javeria Siddique stated that the police in Kenya explained that it was a mistaken identity.

"I lost a friend, husband and my favourite journalist today as per police, he was shot in Kenya. Respect our privacy and in the name of breaking.

"Please do not share our family pics, personal details and his last pictures from the hospital. Remember us in your prayers," Siddique wrote.
