In a letter to media houses Student Association of Nairobi University (SONU) chairman Babu Owino warned that businesses in major towns would be interrupted during the demonstrations but assured that the protests would be peaceful and bloodless.

The riot which was popularized on social media under the hashtag #OccupyAnniversaryTowers evoked angry reactions from the students and sought to involve 'comrades' across the country.
