Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on Sunday, January 8, prayed for God's intervention, lamenting that he was reduced to a beggar pleading for food from foreigners and colonisers.

While praying at the Mt Kenya Conservancy, Gachagua detailed that hunger was severe and destructive to the country's economy and urged God to send rains.

"I spend all my time begging for food! It is humiliating to me! I spend all the time with foreigners begging for food, including the nations that colonised us," Gachagua lamented.

The deputy president noted that he was forced to turn to God after it emerged that the county was facing an unrelenting acute food shortage, especially in arid and semi-arid areas.

“We have had five failed rainy seasons and our people are staring at hunger. Our animals have died. Children cannot eat. I pray that God heals our land. I pray that God forgives our sins and heals our land so that our people can enjoy the fruits of their hard work,” he prays.

While speaking on the slopes of Mt Kenya, Gachagua asked countrymen to play their role in combating climate change.

“We must all play our part in combating climate change. We must double our efforts to protect our environment,” Gachagua stated, adding, “Even as we pray for divine intervention, we will do what we must.”

Gachagua also visited River Rikki, whose waters have significantly reduced, to demonstrate the effects of climate change on nature practically.

He further interceded on behalf of the youth wallowing in drug abuse, lamenting that they were at the mercy of traffickers.

“I pray for the boychild. Our boys are troubled by alcoholism, unemployment, and drug abuse. I pray that God touches the hearts of those who sell drugs to our children and make them stop.”

“I also pray that you deliver Kenyan families from cancer. Families are devastated. Cancer has become a challenge for Kenyans. Families are left financially and emotionally devastated. I pray you heal us from cancer because people are crying and in distress. Dry our tears and hear our prayers.”

He re-affirmed, "I know God has heard my prayer."

According to Gachagua, Mount Kenya offered solace to his parents, who fought against colonial masters during the Mau Mau war.

He returned to the mountain to seek another dimension of freedom -- that against hunger, cancer, and drug abuse among young people.

On Friday, January 6, 2023, the Deputy President also prayed for God to help President William Ruto to realise his vision for the country.
