The government is set to mark and fence off all riparian land in Nairobi County in a move aimed at addressing national disasters.

Speaking during an interview on Spice FM on Tuesday, May 7, Deputy Government Spokesperson Gabriel Muthuma detailed that the government was moving on with the plan to ensure that Kenyans do not settle in those areas again.

Muthuma added that the government officials led by President William Ruto would also undertake a massive tree-planting exercise in those areas after the evacuations.

"The riparian land is being marked 30 meters from the water body. As people move, a massive tree-growing programme will be done," he stated.

On the other hand, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki added that the areas would also serve as a recreational spots for Kenyans.

"We have 40, 500 households which we have had to move. Unlike in the past, most of those households have moved voluntarily.

"We are reclaiming it, fencing it off and planting trees. We are making it a recreational area for Kenyans. However, we will no longer allow settlements there," Kindiki declared.

House Allocations for Affected Families

As revealed by the Deputy Government Spokesperson, National Government officials were undertaking a registration exercise for Kenyans whose homes were demolished.

Muthuma added that the names will be added to a database set to be used in the allocation of the first 20,000 social houses constructed under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).

"The database is being compiled and what it is going to do is to prioritise Kenyans for the social housing programme. They will continue paying the Ksh3,000 until they own the houses," he stated.

In the last four days, over 100,000 Kenyans have been evacuated from riparian land including in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Mathare and Kibera.

As announced by President William Ruto on Monday, the government is also offering Ksh10,000 for Kenyans affected by the demolitions.
