Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday arrested a Maseno University student over alleged involvement in the rape and violent robbery of fellow female students.

In the April incident reported to the police by a member of the community, two first-year students aged 19 and 20 were attacked while sleeping in their shared room.

According to detectives, the two girls were ambushed in the dead of the night by two assailants who were armed with a machete and a dagger.

The gang went ahead to threaten to stab the fear-stricken girls if they shouted before the alleged involvement in rape and robbing the victims their phones.

After making sure that the attackers were out of the vicinity, the girls screamed for help.

The neighbours who were on high alert quickly rushed to the intervention and rushed the two girls to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The matter was then reported to the police who mobilised a team of detectives from Kisumu West and pursued the case.

After several days of trailing the suspects, the officers eventually caught up with one of the suspects involved in the heinous crime.

The 23-year-old suspect was ambushed at his house in the Chulaimbo area within Maseno, and one of the victims' phones which was stolen on the fateful night recovered.

"New leads to his accomplice(s) have since been obtained and the investigators are hot on their trail," the DCI officers noted.

In an analogous situation in November last year, DCI officers arrested a suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted two college students in Kakamega.

A police report revealed the victims who shared a room at Kamgoi Village were suddenly woken up by two heavily armed men at around 6 am.

According to the victims, the two men who bore pangas and knives threatened to kill them if they raised any alarm.
