A man from Bungoma County has gained relative fame in India as the Asian country prepares for the 2024 nationwide elections.
The man who went viral in Kenya in 2016 was falsely identified as a staunch supporter of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In viral posts shared in India, a section of the Prime Minister's supporters used a clip of the Bungoma man to show how popular Modi was.
“When Modi reached to address a rally and started going back, a blind devotee could not stop himself,” one of the clips was captioned.
Ironically, it was posted by a journalist who claimed, “Writing the truth has become a habit.”
While multiple surveys show Modi as a very popular politician in his country, no supporter clutched his chopper during a political rally.
The Bungoma man had hung onto the chopper during the burial of businessman Jacob Juma.
While appearing in court afterwards, the man had stated that he hung on the helicopter so as to view the body of his hero for one last time.
He sustained injuries and evaded being electrocuted by low-lying power lines before he was dropped at Bungoma airstrip.
Narendra Modi’s office or his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not comment on the video seen as to rally his supporters.
India is in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections, which started on April 19 and ends on June 1.
Lok Sabha is the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament, and politicians use various means to gain popularity and votes.
