Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from Nairobi Regional Headquarters on Saturday arrested five suspects for allegedly scamming unsuspecting job seekers.
The five were arrested at a popular Nairobi sports ground while allegedly running a fake recruitment drive for those seeking overseas jobs.
The suspects were cornered following a tip-off from members of the public about the suspicious activities of the recruitment agency in question.
According to the detectives, preliminary Investigations revealed that the National Employment Authority had flagged the exercise as a scam.
Among those cornered during the raid included a foreign national who was among the 8 people accused of running the fake recruitment drive.
During the interrogation, the officers realised that about 1,000 job seekers had already applied for overseas jobs through the flagged recruitment agency.
While conducting the raid, three other suspects managed to escape forcing the DCI officers to launch another manhunt for the trio.
"Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant and to report such agencies to the police for action," detectives noted.
The move comes barely a month after the Embu County Government warned the public to be wary of scammers posing to offer jobs.
In a notice to the press, the county government claimed that there were fraudsters circulating county appointment and promotion opportunities in exchange for money.
“We wish to caution Embu County employees and the general public against falling into the trap of unscrupulous people who have devised this scheme with the sole intention of conning them,” read part of the statement.
“We would urge anyone who receives these suspicious job offers which require them to pay money for whatever reason to secure a job opportunity, to ignore them."
