The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on Tuesday announced the reopening of a runway at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after a disabled aircraft was removed from the stretch.

In a statement issued moments after the closure, the agency announced that normal airport operations had resumed.

“The disabled aircraft has been recovered from the runway, and normal airport operations have resumed,” read part of the statement.

This came that the runway closure had been caused by an aircraft incident, although details surrounding the same were limited.

No injuries however were reported from the Tuesday morning episode.

"Removal of the aircraft is underway.  We apologize for any inconvenience caused and will provide updates shortly," KAA announced at first.

Authorities at the national airport revealed that  the operation control team at JKIA diverted the faulty plane which had just jetted  into Nairobi.

It was further revealed that the incident was occasioned by a report released by the Sharjah Airport that there was tyre debris on the runaway.

"Our control team diverted the aircraft to Nairobi instead of proceeding to Juba," a statement issued after the incident read in parts.

Before landing, authorities ascertained that the aircraft wheels were in good condition for safe landing as only one out of six wheels were damaged.

This came a few days after Caleb Kositany, the KAA Chairperson highlighted the State's plans to expand and upgrade JKIA.

"The planned upgrade aim to enhance airport's capacity to handle more passengers and flights, position Nairobi as a premier aviation hub in Africa," KAA communicated in a post.
