Kisumu East Member of Parliament Shakeel Shabbir was ejected from Parliament on Tuesday for staging a demonstration on the House floor.
Shabbir interrupted Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei, who was proposing amendments to reject the entire Finance Bill.
He then displayed a placard rejecting the Finance Bill, prompting Parliament orderlies to move to restrain him.
Anticipating capture, Shabbir began running inside Parliament to evade apprehension.
Opposition led by Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi could be seen cheering on as the MP evaded over 6 orderlies seeking to restrain him.
He was later caught and ejected from the House after orders from Shollei who is leading the Committee of the Whole House.
Budalangi Constituency MP Raphael Wanjala opposed the ejection remarking that it violated the rights of Shabbir.
“The honourable member was very orderly just carrying a placard. The orderlies, how can they go and grab him in the House who was not violent,” he asked.
“The member was out of order, you cannot picket in the house. You can picket outside the precincts of Parliament,” Shollei responded.
After the temporal disruption, Shollei called on the Parliament to resume business in approving Finance Bill amendments proposed by the Finance Committee and other members of the House.
Notably, the Azimio coalition has withdrawn all its proposed amendments to the Finance Bill.
According to Wandayi, the opposition outfit has decided to reject the Bill in its totality.
