A 4.6 per cent inflation for the month of June 2024, saw an increase in prices for basic commodities including fuel.
This was according to inflation highlights released by the Central Bank on Kenya (CBK) on Sunday which were prepared by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
Apart from fuel, there was also an increase in the price of vegetables including onions, kale and cabbages.
“Inflation is calculated as the change in price between June 2024 and June 2023,” CBK spoke of the price changes.
Cooking gas also known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) had the highest increase of 4.7 per cent.
Petrol, diesel and kerosene increased by 4.3 per cent, 3.5 per cent and 1.0 per cent respectively.
There was a reprieve for electricity users as the prices dipped by 6.8 per cent for 200 Kilowatts and 5.3 per cent for 50 Kilowatts.
On average, there was a 6.4 per cent increase in the price of fuel due to the inflation change.
For food items, onions had the highest increase in price by 53.3 per cent with Kale popularly known as Sukumawiki increasing in price by 45.3 per cent.
The price of cabbages on the other hand increased by 24.2 per cent.
Due to a good rainfall season in the 2023/2024 calendar year, maize flour dropped prices by 33.2 per cent while wheat flour recorded a 10 per cent drop.
Kenyans battling a high cost of living also received a reprieve as sugar dropped in price by 17.7 per cent.
