Sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended 204 suspects found engaging in criminal activities in the guise of protesting in Tuesday's youth-driven demonstrations.

Of the 204 apprehended, 35 were from the Coastal region, 18 were in Nyanza, and 11 and 4 were in Rift Valley and Eastern regions respectively.

Tuesday's protests saw the wanton destruction of property and looting by various criminals masquerading as protestors.

To heighten the investigation, the DCI has deployed scrupulous investigators across the affected regions to pursue suspects captured on CCTV cameras and mobile phone recordings violently robbing, stealing, and destroying properties and businesses of innocent citizens.

In a statement on Tuesday, the criminal investigation unit assured Kenyans that all perpetrators of looting and destruction of property will face the full force of the criminal justice system.

"The DCI reminds culprits that they shall bear the consequences of their actions individually in the corridors of justice," read part of the statement.

The DCI further urged the public to grant access to some of the CCTV footage captured to help them expedite the process of investigations.

"We appeal to property and business owners whose premises are installed with CCTV cameras, and which may have captured criminal activities being perpetuated, to grant access."

Imaging and Acoustic Unit detectives will conduct a country-wide search to retrieve the footage in the pursuit of justice for the affected persons.

Those in possession of useful footage have also been requested to surrender them to any DCI offices across the country.

In a similar incident in Mombasa, detectives arrested a private citizen linked to the shooting of two people on Tuesday, during anti-government protests.

The suspect is said to have been 'angered' by protestors who were engaging in looting and destruction of property in the streets of Mombasa.

The private firearm holder was cornered by the detectives after a spirited manhunt. This was after reports narrowed down on him as the culprit behind the shootings that occurred in Ganjoni, Mombasa County at noon.
