Over 10 people have lost their lives after a bus hit a trailer along the Nairobi- Garissa Highway.
According to preliminary reports, the accident which happened in the wee hours of Friday, July 11, involved a bus that was headed to Mandera.
At the time of publication, the cause of the accident was yet to be established.
However, reports indicated that the accident was caused during an overtaking attempt.
It was noted that the bus veered off after attempting to overtake an unknown vehicle and hit the trailer.
Following the incident, rescue operations were commenced with well-wishers moving with speed to help those who were injured.
Survivors of the Friday morning accident are currently at the Garissa Referral Hospital for treatment.
Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan confirmed the accident adding that 10 people lost their lives in the Friday morning accident.
He mourned those who had died noting that the accident was tragic.
"I am saddened to learn of an accident involving Makkah bus last night in Mwingi in which 10 people died. I send my condolences to the families of our brothers and sisters who have left us and the entire people of Mandera.
"I pray to Allah (SWT) to forgive their sins and admit them to Janatul Firdous, Amen. I also pray to Allah to give the families of our brothers and sisters the strength to cope with their loss," he stated.
According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), over 1,000 people lost their lives in road accidents between January to April 2024.
Notably, those who were mostly affected by the accidents were pedestrians.
