Dormitories in two schools located in Kirinyaga County were on Tuesday night burned down in a wave of unrest that has gripped learning institutions in the region.
Separate fires were reported at the two schools, Kiamatugu Boys High School and St Mary’s Kagio Boys High School, on Tuesday night even as authorities continue to work with the preliminary belief that the fires were caused by rogue students.
According to media reports, three of the dormitories were burned down in the fires.
In Kiamatugu Boys, two dormitories were burnt down and valuable property destroyed.
Meanwhile, in Kagio Boys only one of the dormitories was burned down.
However, in both incidents, there were no injuries or fatalities reported.
The burning down of the dormitories is one of the four cases of unrest that have been reported in the past week from the county.
On Saturday evening, in Kerugoya Boys a dormitory went up in flames as a fire began at 8 pm in what is believed to be a suspected arson attack.
The fire department reported to the scene and managed to put out the fire before it spread to other buildings in the school.
However, no injury or casualties were reported as the students scampered for safety.
Following the fire, the school was closed indefinitely. Another school in the region, Kagia Boys, saw one of its dormitories burn down as well.
Consequently, principals from the schools in Kirinyaga County convened a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the unrest in the county.
In the meeting, Sabina Aroni, the Central Region Director of Education Education, stated that while nobody had been implicated in the unrest, in most cases the investigations have shown the possibility of a teacher being involved.
