Day two of the vetting process for Cabinet Secretary nominees kicks off today with a high-profile line-up before the panel, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.
Among those scheduled to face the committee is Aden Duale, who is appearing for a second time as a nominee for the Cabinet Secretary position. Last week, President William Ruto reshuffled his list of Cabinet nominees, leading to a significant change: Duale has been reassigned from the Defence docket to the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry. This position was previously held by former CS Soipan Tuya.
The unexpected shake-up was announced to Parliament on Tuesday by Speaker Wetangula. In the new arrangement, Soipan Tuya will now take over the Defence Ministry, a role Duale previously occupied from October 31, 2022, until his dismissal on July 11, 2024. Duale was reinstated on July 19, 2024, marking a turbulent period in his political career.
A former Member of the National Assembly for Garissa Township Constituency, Duale previously served as Majority Leader under the Jubilee Party in both the 11th and 12th Parliaments.
His tenure was marred by his ousting in 2020 for alleged disloyalty to former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Initially elected in 2007 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Duale left the party in 2009 to join forces with Ruto in founding the United Republican Party.
