Traffic disruption was witnessed on Thursday at the Mtito Andei area, located along the Mombasa -Nairobi highway after a 60-seater passenger bus burst into flames.

The early morning incident saw passengers scamper for safety as the fire began spreading to other parts of the bus.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire might have been caused by a technical failure.

Following the incident, firefighters were quickly dispatched to the scene to help put out the fire which had engulfed the bus.

In the videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, a billow of smoke was seen emanating from the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) even as the firefighters intensified their efforts to contain it.

Although it took a while, firefighters eventually managed to put out the fire before the bus was towed away.

Passengers travelling in the bus were reassigned to other buses and continued with their journeys.

Cases of Public Service Vehicles bursting in flames have become rampant recently with several similar cases reported in different parts of the country.

In a similar situation in February this year, a bus travelling to Mombasa from Nairobi reportedly burst into flames.

However, the passengers were quickly evacuated from the bus before being placed in another PSV to allow them continue with their journey.

While confirming the incident, the bus company in a statement, expressed remorse for the affected passengers and vowed to tame a recurrence of such.

“We are deeply sorry to inform you that one of our buses travelling from Kitale to Malindi experienced a fire incident earlier today. The bus caught fire around 4:00 AM near the Voi area," the bus company noted.

“We are grateful for the swift action that ensured everyone's safety. Our teams assisted these passengers with completing their journey on alternative buses."
