A section of Kericho Governor Eric Mutai's supporters were on Tuesday blocked from accessing the County Assembly as they demonstrated against the move by a section of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) planning an impeachment motion against the county chief.

By Tuesday noon, Kericho MCAs were discussing the impeachment motion against the Governor whom they accused of gross misconduct.

Police were seen heavily protecting the vicinity, some of them at the gate and others in a police vehicle. The irate residents hoisted pro-Mutai placards while chanting " No Mutai, No Peace".

The residents threatened the MCAs fronting the impeachment motion not to come out of the County Assembly buildings.

The MCAs accused the governor of misappropriation of funds that were aimed at helping Londiani victims. He was also accused of gross violation of the constitution, gross violation of various national and County laws, and misuse of office.

"While the governor is on record indicating that the medical bills for all the victims will be waived and taken care of by the county government.  It is not clear why the money had to be paid out from the fund collected to various public hospitals against the expense and equivocal representations of the governor." part of the charge against the governor read.

Governor Mutai has also been accused of failing to work despite the hefty allowances he receives. The impeachment motion was tabled by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony.

This is not the first time the MCAs will be plotting an impeachment motion against the governor.

In 2023, a section of Kericho MCAs threatened to table an impeachment motion against Mutai over allegations of misappropriating Ksh14.5 million donated by well-wishers to respond to and help victims of the Londiani Tragedy.

In June 2024, the governor was also put on the spot for allegedly spending Ksh425.6 million meant for payment of pending bills by his administration.

This is after the County Public Accounts Committee chaired by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’, pressed the governor to explain why his administration only spent Ksh 341.5 million to pay suppliers and contractors.

At the time, the lawmakers wanted to understand discrepancies as raised by audit reports.
