The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday announced that it had arrested a man suspected to be involved in the murder of former Human Resource Manager Willis Ayieko.
The suspect was arrested at his hideout in Nairobi's Dandora Phase IV on Monday 28 October night. The sleuths in a short statement claimed that the suspect had rented the house using money acquired from the crime they had committed which has since hit national headlines.
After the arrest was effected, the suspect was taken to Muthaiga Police Station, where he will be held in the meantime, before detectives quiz him further on the alleged murder.
According to the DCI, forensic analysis had placed the suspect at the scene of the crime. The forensic investigation was conducted by a joint team of DCI's Homicide, Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and Operations detectives.
Investigations are ongoing with the office of the Director of Criminal investigations analyzing crucial leads to uncover and arrest other accomplices.
Willis was found dead on Wednesday, October 23, several days after he went missing after attending a burial in the North Gem in Siaya County. Hours before he was found, his vehicle, a Ford Ranger, was found abandoned in the Sabatia in Vihiga County.
His body was found near a stream, with his hands handcuffed. His family has since disputed that this was a case of robbery with violence holding this was premeditated murder since their kin's body was severely mutilated, leading to the suspicion of a possible grudge.
"He was cut. Eyes were gorged out, ears were cut, the nose was cut, the mouth was cut. Why die such a painful death?" the deceased brother asked while speaking to journalists last week.
CCTV footage which emerged on Wednesday, 23 showed two suspects abandoning Ayieko's vehicle at a petrol station in Sabatia, Vihiga county, on Saturday, October 19.
The two men in possession of the car that they abandoned disabled his dashcam on Friday, October 18 - the same day he went missing. This has led authorities to believe this was a deliberate move to conceal their identities and avoid being nabbed.
Ayieko's body still lies at the Aga Khan Hospital Mortuary pending an autopsy to reveal the cause of his death.
This unfortunate event comes at a time when the country is witnessing a heightened number of disappearances and murder cases.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) on Wednesday, October 23 came out to condemn the recent wave of murders and called upon the Inspector General of police to investigate the cases thoroughly, ensure justice is served and heighten security.
