The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) on Monday flagged down a fake poster purporting that the Society’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezekiel Mutua had been dismissed by the board.
In a statement, MCSK termed the poster which had made rounds for the better part of the weekend as fake cautioning its members not to heed the poster.
MCSK Chairman Lazarus Muli maintained that Mutua was still at the helm of the agency urging members of MCSK to dismiss the allegations that he was removed from the board as fake news.
“Our members and stakeholders can rest assured that Dr. Mutua is in charge and the MCSK leadership is fully behind him,” the statement read in part.
“This is, therefore, to request Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) members and stakeholders to dismiss the propaganda being peddled with the contempt it deserves,” he added.
According to Muli, the material was shared by malicious people intent on hurting Mutua's personal as well as the reputation of MCSK because of the work they have been doing.
“The material being circulated by people with ill motives is pure propaganda by cartels in the industry who are unhappy with the great work Mutua is doing for MCSK and the music industry in general,” the statement added.
The society further revealed he would explore legal avenues to see the authors of the fake poster arrested and face the law.
“Appropriate action is being taken against the authors of the malicious documents to ensure that they face the law for defamation and spreading falsehood,” the statement revealed
He added that the change he initiated by Mutua in the creative industry which has for far too long been held hostage by cartels at the expense of the artists is the main reason why he was being targeted with fake news to poke holes into his work at MCSK.
In the statement, MCSK noted it is fully behind the CEO Mutua and his team as they transform the industry.
It comes as MCSK has been caught in leadership wrangles in the recent past. On August 18, new board members who had come in to take leadership roles were blocked from accessing offices, resulting in drama.
The new members claimed that they were earlier elected as the new leaders at an extraordinary general meeting and insisted that they possess documents showing their appointments. However, MCSK did not comment on the issue at the time.
