The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has revealed a new scam targeting companies in the country.
In a post on their social media on Friday, February 21, the authority exposed a fraud scheme that is sharing emails purporting to award tenders for the construction of various infrastructures.
According to KeNHA, the fraudsters are impersonating the authority and sending emails with the subject "Notification of Intention to Award."
KeNHA revealed that the scammers have created a fake email account with a domain similar to that of the KeNHA. The goal is to mislead unsuspecting individuals.
“We have noted with concern attempts by fraudsters to impersonate the Authority by sending fake "Notification of Intention to Award" emails,” KeNHA stated.
KeNHA has asked anyone who receives such emails not to engage the fraudsters and to report the suspect scammers to the authority.
“The Authority urges the public to remain vigilant and always verify the authenticity of any communication claiming to be from KeNHA,” said Samwel Kumba, KeNHA’s Director of Communication.
While it is unclear how many tenders KeNHA has opened so far and those that are in the works, the authority expects to work on 2,349 kilometers of roads between 2023 and 2027, according to its draft Strategic Plan covering the five years.
This includes the construction of 1,183 kilometers of new roads, enhancing the capacity of 674 kilometers, and rehabilitating 492 kilometers.
In their draft 2023–2027 Strategic Plan, KeNHA aims to work on 2,349 kilometers of roads, including constructing 1,183 kilometers of new roads, enhancing the capacity of 674 kilometers, and rehabilitating 492 kilometers.
