The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) on Wednesday revealed that 8 people sustained gunshot wounds by police while 2 died during the Majaengo protests. Residents staged protests following the death of Ibrahim Ramadhan.
A statement signed by KHRC and Kamkunji Human Rights Defenders Justice Center revealed that 6 people among the injured were admitted at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
The commission added that one of the victims, Dennis Muthui, was taken to Nairobi Funeral Home while the whereabouts of the second body remained unknown after police took it away.
The protests erupted after Ibrahim Ramadhan, a youth, was allegedly shot by police officers in Kamkunji on March 4.
In a statement, the activists demanded an immediate end to the use of lethal force by the police.
KHRC also called upon the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the police service and unearth individuals responsible for the killings and injuries of protestors in Majengo.
“We demand an immediate end to the use of lethal force. The right to protest must be upheld. We also demand that IPOA launch an investigation into the police responsible for these shootings and ensure those found guilty face justice,” KHRC stated.
According to KHRC, police officers opened fire on the residents who were protesting Ibrahim's killing, resulting in two more deaths.
Since the alleged murder, angry residents went to the streets, demanding justice for Ibrahim and accountability from those responsible.
The anti-riot police officers intervened in an attempt to calm the crowds but the residents caused chaos in the Majengo area.
Hussein Khalid, the human rights activist announced that Ibrahim was shot by a police officer on Tuesday while coming from night prayers at the mosque.
According to Khalid, Ibrahim was rushed to Kenyatta Hospital where he died from the injuries hours later.
