The Kenya Meteorological Department has listed Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa among areas that are set to receive heavy rains for the next five days, between Friday, April 4, and Tuesday, April 8.

Kenya Met Director General David Gikungu on Friday afternoon issued an advisory, warning the residents living in the Central region counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi to brace for heavy rains.

Gikungu said rainfall in the central part of Kenya would begin mostly in the afternoon and extend up to nighttime, further warning that the downpour would be accompanied by thunderstorms.

Heavy rains were also expected in the counties located within the Lake Victoria basin and the Rift Valley region; these counties include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo-Marakwet.

A similar weather pattern was projected in Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot Counties.

Counties in the Coastal region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Tana River and Kwale, were also listed among areas that would receive heavy rains for the next five days.

However, according to Gikungu, while most parts of the country were expected to experience heavy downpour, the South Eastern lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta were projected to receive minimal rains.

Other counties also forecasted to receive minimal rains include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, located in the northern part of Kenya.

In his advisory, Gikungu revealed that counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi would experience very cold nights during the forecast period.

According to him, night temperatures in these counties were expected to drop to as low as 11°C for the first two days of the forecast before slightly rising to 12°C for the remaining days.

On the other hand, the Kenya Met boss urged residents living in counties within the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, and the Rift Valley regions to brace for high daytime temperatures.

He noted that daytime temperatures in these regions were expected to reach 31°C for the first four days, rising to 32°C on the last day of the forecast period.
