Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has clarified that the Ksh10,000 given to couples for weddings and an additional Ksh10,000 for childbirth is not meant to increase the population of the county ahead of the 2027 polls.
In a statement released on Tuesday, April 15, Kang’ata said the programme is part of Kang'ata Care, a health insurance scheme targeting vulnerable families in the county.
He also emphasised that the benefits are only available to the registered Kangata care members in Muranga County.
Kang'ata added that the programme has three benefits: Ksh100,000 to families when a relative passes on, Ksh10,000 to newly wedded families and a childbirth gift
“Clarification: the aim of the programme is not to increase the population of Muranga. The benefits are open only to Kangatacare members. Not every Muranga resident is a Kang'ata Care card member."
"This is an insurance for vulnerable families that has 3 benefits – last expense of 100k after a member passes on and a 10k wedding and childbirth gift,” he said.
Kang’ata was responding to comments made by media personality Maina Kageni, asking that the programme not be misrepresented.
The governor insisted the initiative is an insurance-based support system, not a population control strategy.
This clarification follows a post made by Kang’ata on April 14 through his official X account, where he invited newly married Kang'ata Care members to claim their gifts.
“Are you in Kang'ata Care, and have you officially wedded? Claim your gift in our Muranga office located at Muranga Level 5. It is your right—paid for under insurance arrangements. Congratulations to the happy couple Kanyenyaini Kangema Ngoeini Village,” the post read.
The Kang'ata Care health Insurance program was officially launched in October 2022 by the Murang'a county government in partnership with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), and it began operation in January 2023.
It provides comprehensive health coverage such as inpatient and outpatient services, dental and optical care, maternity and emergency services and treatment for chronic and critical illness.
