The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has extended its working hours to allow Kenyans to file their 2024 income tax returns.

KRA issued a notice on Tuesday, May 20, announcing the extension of working hours across all its service centres and Huduma Centres to ensure all Kenyans with KRA PINs filed their returns by the June 30 closing date.

An income tax return is a declaration of income earned by an individual within a particular year. Every individual with a KRA PIN is required to file this return every year, regardless of whether they earned an income or not.

In the new schedule, KRA said all its official service centres and Huduma centres in populous regions would be open for 12 hours continuously, from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays.

On Saturdays, only the tax service centres would be operational, from 9 am to 1 pm, while Huduma centres would remain closed on the said day. However, on June 28, which would be on a Saturday, the tax service centres would operate from 9 am to 6 pm.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Huduma Centres would be opened on normal working hours, from 8 am to 5 pm, but remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Similarly, Kenyans seeking to reach out to KRA officers for help through email or phone call were urged to do so on weekdays between 7 am to 7 pm and on weekends between 9 am to 1 pm.

In the notice, the Revenue Authority announced that on the final day of filing returns, all KRA offices across the country would be operational for 17 hours, from 7 am to 12 midnight.

"Have you filed your 2024 income tax returns? We have extended our working hours at our Service Centres, select Huduma Centres and Contact Centre to help you beat the 30th June deadline," KRA announced.

KRA urged Kenyans seeking to file their returns to do so through the Authority's iTax portal: iTax.kra.go.ke. Kenyans with no income to declare are required to file a NIL return.

According to KRA, an individual who fails to file their income tax return by June 30 would be fined Ksh2,000 or face a 5 per cent penalty of the total income.

Kenyans who are exempt from income tax are also required to file returns and enter a valid Exemption Certificate Number. Such people include individuals living with disability
