Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has been arrested, the National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed.
While releasing an update on the Saba Saba protests on Monday, July 7, NPS confirmed Mukunji's arrest, but did not reveal where he was locked up.
Mukunji, an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, is believed to have been nabbed over allegations of incitement to violence during the Saba Saba Day protests.
According to Ndegwa Njiru, one of Gachagua's lawyers, Mukunji was arrested at around 3pm and booked at Kibii Police Station at 3:53pm via OB number 06/07/07/2025.
Njiru also revealed that Mukunji was later picked up by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from Juja Police Station, a development that was confirmed by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kibii.
“The OCS has confirmed that he only booked him for the exclusive purpose of holding him,” Njiru stated.
While disclosing the lack of information on the lawmaker's whereabouts, Njiru noted that Mukunji's car was left at the Kibii station. He also informed that his transfer despite being confirmed, was not officially recorded.
In an update issued hours later by Njiru, Mukunji was said to be held by the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU).
The advocate also revealed that the MP was due to face terrorism charges, apparently in connection with the protests.
“I am briefed that the police is planning to plant drugs and explosives in his car that is currently parked at Kibii Police station,” Njiru further noted.
He added that despite demanding to get the inventory to Mukunji's car, the police declined.
Other leaders allied to Gachagua, such as Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, have demanded Mukunji's immediate release. For his part, Gachagua is yet to comment.
